Judy Higgins, fiddler

Since picking up the fiddle seven years ago, Judy has played on a restored Pullman train, Pete Seeger’s Sloop Clearwater, and stages in Chicago and beyond. With her band, the duo The Wren & The Whistler, she took first prize in the Midwest Fiddle Championship (Group Division) and co-founded the Old Time Jamboree (a monthly open stage and community event). In 2014, Judy received a grant from the Illinois Arts Council to study Midwestern Fiddle Traditions with Master Fiddler Paul Tyler (aka Dr. Dosido). She plays tunes from the Midwest and around the world and composes her own fiddle tunes.

Judy’s Etsy shop grew out of her desire to have a small (and cute!) journal to make notes about her daily yoga practice. A lover of keeping track of things, she expanded her product line to include journals for music and dance, other paper goods, and a Password Organizer that is quickly becoming her most popular item.

A designer since 1995, Judy has honed her talent over the years for developing targeted, effective visual communications. Her work in the nonprofit and public affairs sector has taught her to design with the message in mind and make every design choice count. Her approach is simple; in order to create materials that engage, inform and inspire, the design must be at once relevant, authoritative and beautiful. Above all, she appreciates that each client is unique. The process of discovering a client’s essence and identity fuels her creative work and keeps it fresh.

Judy founded Union Design in 2008, where she helps non-profit organizations do the important work of communicating through graphic design.  She has done award-winning work for the Poetry Foundation, University of Illinois at Chicago, Perkins and Will and Women of the ELCA.  Other current and past clients include: Gallery 37, Chicago Housing Authority, Ounce of Prevention, Safer Foundation, Strategic Management Society and Northwestern University.
